Step by Step -

1) I started off by applying Pros-aide in between my pinkie and ring finger. I did the same between the index and middle finger. Once my fingers were stuck together I then started coating the two paired fingers in liquid latex, careful not to touch the middle and ring fingers together as then all my fingers would get stuck together.

2) I coated my fingers in latex for about 8+ layers to make sure they wouldn't come apart. I then powdered this when I felt there was enough layers on them. My hand and arm was then covered with a Foundation, I used Avon Ideal Flawless Foundation. I then set this with Translucent Powder.

Inner Demons Makeup

As Halloween is around the corner I wanted to start creating some more spooky and gory looks. I created a look a while back of a gory masquerade mask and wanted to do something like that but with my whole face peeling off instead of just the eye area. In order to make it even more creepy I thought I could do a makeup look underneath so I thought about what I wanted that look to be I thought about what things people fear and knew that it was hard as everyone has different fears. I suddenly realized one thing everyone has in common and it is in fact our fears. Our own personal inner demons are all different but we all have them so I wanted to create my inner demon and rip off my face to reveal it.

This look has more of a long process than my others as there is more prep work behind this. I had to face cast myself in order to make the latex copy of my face.

Step by Step -

1) I put Vaseline all over my face and even more through my eyebrow hair and lashes. This makes sure the plaster bandage doesn't stick to the hairs and pull them out when you remove it. It also eases the release of the dry plaster bandage. I got my mum to assist me with the next step as I was doing it on myself but needed to cover my eyes at one point which is when she stepped in. I then took a bowl of warm water and cut up plaster bandage into strips. The strips varied from thick to thin, long to short to cover different areas. I wet the bandage and ran two fingers down the length of it to get off the excess water, I then started applying it all over my face. When doing this its good to have hand signals with your assistant so they know if something is wrong as your mouth and eyes can be covered. Once the whole face is covered (aside from the nostrils) the bandage can be left a few minutes to set.

2) Once the bandage feels solid I started moving my face under it (raising my eyebrows, smiling, wrinkling my nose) This loosens the mask and makes it easier to get off. Its good to have someone help you remove the mask and it may be difficult.

3) Once the mask was off I then covered it in my plaster bandage on areas which looked a little thin (hold the mask to the light and if you can see the light through it then it needs some more layers). The nostrils also needed covering otherwise when the plaster is poured in it will spill out of them.

4) I then let it dry. Once it was completely dry I covered the inside with Vaseline and then put it in a box with towels around the edges. This will give the mold something to rest on and keep it level so the plaster doesnt drip out. I mixed up the plaster ( some different brands may vary in ratio of water to plaster, I just made sure mine has a slightly melted ice cream or thick milkshake consistency). I poured this into the mold and let it set over night.

5) I removed the face cast out of the plaster bandage by pulling on the edges all the way round and then eventually pulling it all off slowly. The Vaseline should've aided the removal. I wash the cast over to remove the Vaseline (washing up liquid helps remove Vaseline), and let it dry. I then sanded the surface to make it smooth with sandpaper. To protect it I put on a few layers of PVA Glue, this also fills in any holes or grooves which I couldn't sand away.

6) Now its time for the making of the actual latex copy of my face. I got this method from Glam&Gore tutorial of a snake which shed its skin, I'm going to post the link below. I started by applying Vaseline all over the face cast. I then started applying liquid latex with a sponge. I let this dry in between layers and applied about 6+ layers. The whole thing was then powdered and I went in with a foundation all over the latex piece. I used an old Avon foundation that I don't use but kept, it worked well for this look. I recommend using a foundation which is cheaper than some big brands because its a waste to use an expensive product especially as you might have to do a few layers to get even coverage. Thicker formulas work better and cream foundation would also probably work. I set the foundation with powder like I normally would on the face.

7) I shaded under the cheeks bones slightly with a contour powder and added blush to the cheeks. The lips were painted on using a liquid lipstick as this has staying power and dries well. I used a cheaper lip stain by MUA in red ('Reckless'). The eyebrows are painted in with short brush strokes and I used Kryolan Mascara Cake in brown to make an outline and then darkened this with the Black. A skin Illustrator Palette works just as well if not better. The eyes are closed so I painted a lash line over where I think it would naturally sit if my eyes were closed (usually closer to the bottom than in the middle of the eye area as you have lid space to account for too). I used black for this and then blended some eye shadows on the 'eyelid' to make it look more real. 'Goldmine' on the lid, 'Sketch' in the crease and 'Carbon' on the outer corner. Lashes were glued onto the lash line with super glue as lash glue didn't quite stick enough.

To remove from the cast I used powder and a brush and as i peeled off the latex I coated it in powder so the underside doesn't stick to itself.

Step by Step -

1) I started the makeup by drawing in the mouth outline with Black Facepaint by Snazaroo. Once this is done I then paint the face with a light grey colour (32B Aquacolor by Kryolan). I painted the teeth in the mouth outline next with a black face paint, making long triangular shapes and then filling them in with white facepaint. The eyebrows were then painted on with short thin strokes of black face paint starting a bit further down than the start of the natural brow and angled up heavily then sweeping down to create a harsh arch. This will make the facial expression more angry.

2) The red eyes are painted on my eyelids and just on my socket line in a circular shape with red face paint. I used black face paint to outline the top of this and then lined the upper lash line with the same paint. I then took a black pencil liner and lined the waterline. Using a grey Supracolor by Kryolan (517) I blended this into the inner corner just under the painted brow and took this under my lower lash line, I blended this down in the inner corner where a natural dark under eye would be. My natural brow is in the position to be a new crease so I used the same grey colour Supracolor and put this into my brow. I created frown lines in between the brows curving upwards and little lines going from the inner corners to the center of the nose bridge to make the demon appear more creepy. I raised my natural eyebrows and created lines on the forehead where my natural forehead crinkles up. I put another curved along the top of the arch of the brow. The cheekbones were then put in place with the same shade going along the cheekbone and coming down slightly to curve around the mouth. The corner of the painted mouth were accentuated with lines around them too. Little lines are added at the sides of the mouth.

3) A pointy shape is painted on the nose above the nostrils to make them appear more lizard-like, you may need to paint around the natural nostril so it all appears black to make the illusion work. Lines are added on the sides of the nose and the end of the nose has the grey colour blended upon it. A black Supracolor (071) and applied this around the painted eyes as well as under my lower lash line. I set this with black powder ('Corrupt' from the MUA Romantic Efflorescence Palette). I also applied grey Supracolor around the folds of the nose (where the nostrils are).

4) Veins were drawn around the eye with supracolor with the colours: 303 Yellow, 082 Dark Red, 091 blue mixed with black and 512 Green. The catlike pupil is painted on the eye with Maybelline Gel liner in Black. A white dot is then added to the centre of this. Little Yellow and Dark Red tiny swiggles can be put on the red eyes around the pupil. Mascara was added to lashes to darken them.The teeth are shaded at the top edge with 'Camel' (Peach) and 'Chino' (Light Brown) from the MUA Matte Winter Forest Palette.

This look was really fun to create and I'm happy with the outcome. If I was to do it again I think I would create the veins with a Skin Illustrator Palette instead of Supracolor as the colours seemed to blend together and didn't keep the look I was originally going for as it ended up a bit messy.

Blue and Pink Eye Makeup

I've recently been on holiday so I experimented with bright colours in order to create some fresh and tropical looks. This blue and pink look was one of my faves so I wrote everything down in order to recreate it in the future.

Step by Step -

1) Urban Decay Primer Potion is applied on the eyelids and set with 'Thirteen' by the Urban Decay Smoky Palette. Tape is then applied on the outer corner of the eye, this is an easy way of getting a sharp angle with the eye shadow and the wing.

2) I took the Sleek Acid Palette and used a raspberry pink shade with a bit of shimmer in it (there's two pinks in the palette, a neon and a darker toned pink so I used the latter). This was swept on the socket line and blended upwards. I wanted this colour to be intense so I build it up by mixing it with 'Backlash' from the Urban Decay Spectrum Palette. This pink tone will work as a transition shade.

3) I took the light blue from the Acid Palette and pressed this on to my eye lid with my finger. Some shimmery eye shadows tend to have more fall out than others so by putting it on with a finger, this will press the shadow into the skin which will make it more secure.

4) 'Flatline' from the Spectrum Palette is put in the inner corner and blended upwards to below the start of the brow. This opens the eye area up. 'High' from the Smoky Palette is put in the inner corner too. 'Darkside' from the Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette is blended into the the crease and then 'Blackheart' is then added to the outer corner and slightly blended into the crease.

5) I took 'Smoulder' from the Smoky Palette and darkened the outer corner even more.I then applied winged eye liner with Maybelline Gel Liner and and angled brush. 'Virgin' from the Urban Decay Naked Palette was dusted on the brow bone.

6) The tape was removed and then 'Backlash' from the Spectrum Palette was added to the lower lash line. 'Darkside' was then blended on 3/4 of the way into the lower lash line to give definition on the outer half. 'Carbon' or any black shadow is pressed into 3/4 of the way in the lower lash line and a nude liner is applied to the waterline. Mascara and lashes are also applied to the eyes.

The eye makeup is now complete.

Golden Goddess

I have always wanted to do a makeup look for a goddess so I started designing a face chart to create my vision. I've recently been on holiday so I thought now would be the best time to completely it as a tan would set off the golden element of the look. I also did some henna and had an outfit which I thought would suit the theme so once my ideas came together I had to make them a reality. This makeup look isn't too drastic as face or body paint isn't involved, it's more about liner and glowing skin with the addition of glitter.

Step by Step -

1) Prime the eyes with urban Decay Primer Potion and set this with 'Thirteen' by Urban Decay (the pale shade in the Smoky palette)

2) I filled in my brows next with a wet brush dipped in the Brown shade from the Kryolan Cake Mascara kit (can also be used for liner). This will make them more prominent.

3) I then used tape on the outer corner of my eyes making sure the angle is really winged out. I started off the eye makeup by applying the winger liner using Maybelline Gel Liner in Black. I made the wings quite long with a medium thickness. The inner corner was also taken quite far in to give it a cat eye effect. I then outlined a cut crease using Black Track Gel Liner from MAC because this isn't as thick and will glide on in a smooth line. I created a line going from the start of the brow downwards to the inner corner and connected this to the cut crease line. The outer end of the cut crease line should be a little bit longer than the winged liner on the lash line.This is blended slightly.

4) An orange eye shadow is swept above the cut crease line and blended out. 'Smog' from the Urban Decay Naked Palette is added closer to the line and also blended out. 'Carbon' by MAC is used to soften the cut crease line and 'Bitter' by Urban Decay (Vice 4 Palette) is used to blend this out further.

5) Maybelline Color Tattoo in 'Creme De Nude' is applied to the eyelid in between the two liners (the winged on the upper lash line and the cut crease liner). NYX Glitter Glue is put on top of this and gold glitter is added too.

6) 'Ice' from the MUA Twelfth Night Palette is added to the inner part of the lid. The tape is removed and Black Track is used to paint a line under the lower lash line and flicked to below the liner in the inner corner. Kryolan 'Snow' Cream Liner is put in the waterline and lower lash line. This will make the eyes appear bigger.

7) 'Bitter' eye shadow is blended below the lower liner. Mascara is brushed on the top lashes. I then added Ardell Babies Lashes on the lower liner and Eylure 157 Texture lashes with Red Cherry Wispies on the upper lash line.

8) I removed the glitter fall out before I concealed my under eyes with the Sleek Concealer Palette. I used the Sleek Cream Contour Palette to shade my cheekbones, forehead, jawline and sides of my nose. Makeup Forever HD Foundation was applied to the face and everything was blended out. I set my base with a translucent powder by Supercover.

9) I then went over my contour with the Anastasia Contour Kit. I used 'Mimosa' from the Anastasia Glow Kit on my cheekbones where I would usually put blush or bronzer and also on my forehead. 'Crushed Pearl' is then applied to the nose, cupids bow, brow bones and very tops of cheekbones.

10) 'Spice' Lip Pencil by MAC is used to line the lips and I then take a pinkish/nude tone lipstick ( 'Is This All I Need' by I Love Makeup) and paint this all over my lips. A gloss which reflects gold is then added to the very center of the lips, I used a cheap one for this so I'm unsure of the brand.

11) I applied two types of glitter to the cheekbones, neck and forehead (coming down the center of the forehead then curving in two arches just like the top half of a heart). Kryolan Aqua Glitter in 'Light Bronze' and a hair gel by Kryolan in 'Pearl'.

12) My hair was put it three braids the night before, two at the sizes and one in the middle, I completed the makeup and then took my hair out which resulted in tight waves. I also created a henna design on my hand which went well with this look. I hairsprayed my hair and also used a shine spray on top.

Black and White Drag Makeup

I have recently been watching the show 'RuPauls Drag Race' and have been inspired by the makeup on the show. One of the makeups looked as if the photo was taken in black and white as they were the only colours used to create the look. I decided to try a black and white drag look on myself. The look turned out very theatrical but it was a very fun look to wear.

Step by Step -

1) I started this look off by brushing my eyebrow hairs up with a spoolie and using a spatula to apply Pros-aide through the brow hairs. The spoolie was used to flatten the hair up and I pressed a finger over the hair to help with this. Pros-aide gets really sticky so having some on your finger when flattening the hairs will stop your finger from getting stuck to your brow. I powdered with the white powder on a powder puff to soak up any excess moisture between layers and repeated this process until the grooves where the brow hairs lay were filled and the brows are flat and fairly smooth.

2) I put White Tv Paint stick all over the brows and forehead and blended this with a flat foundation brush. I then applied Urban Decay Primer Potion to my eyes and Set the eye and forehead area with the white powder.

3) I then applied tape to the outer corner of my eye. I used Black Track Gel Liner to draw long winged liner which also extends out in the inner corner. I then used the same Gel Liner to draw a cut crease line on the lid and joined it to the wing on the outer corner. I blended this out slightly and added black eye shadow to aid this. Silver or light grey eye shadow is used to blend also as this gives it a more seamless effect when the shadows are gradual.

4) White is applied over the lid and the Helen E Glitter Glue and White Disco Glitter is applied to the eyelid. The brows are then drawn on with Black Track Gel Liner and an angled brush s used to create the shape. I did them quite arched and exaggerated. The start is more blended with white shadow to give it a faded look. Black shadow is used to fill in the brows.

5) I removed the tape and cleaned up under the eyes. Gel Liner is used to draw in a bottom lash line and this is also extended in the inner corner. This liner connects to the winged liner. I then filled in the waterline and the natural lower lash line with the Kryolan Cream Liner in 'Snow'.

6) The rest of the face is now painted with the White TV Paint Stick and this in blended down the neck and on the chest. Grey and Black from the Kryolan Supracolor Palette is used for a contour shade and I applied it with a flat brush on the cheekbones and jawline, This is blended with a stipple brush with white TV Paint Stick on. A harsh line can be created on the cheekbones by using TV Paint Stick on a flat brush under the dark shade and blended down. The chest is contoured around the bust and collarbones. I powdered everything with a powder puff with white powder to set the makeup. Black eye shadow is used on a fan brush to intensify the contour and then blended with the brush which had the white powder on. The nose is contours with black and white eye shadow along the sides and tip of the nose.

7) The Revolution Golden Sugar palette contains a white highlight which I used under the eyes, nose, chin, brow bone, collarbones, forehead and bust. Mascara is combed through the lashes. I then applied both sets of Kryolan lashes on the upper lash line and then the Ardell lashes on the bottom. The lips are then over lined with the black pencil and filled in with black lipstick.

A black Wig was added to complete the look.

To remove the pros-aide from the brows I used pro-clean which is a mineral oil remover which removes prosthetics and glues. This is used on a cotton pad and left to soak on the brows and then in circular motions I managed to remove all the glue.

Evaluation

I loved this look so much, I think its because it's so dramatic and has lots of different elements. If I was doing it again I would put maybe a shimmery white on the i'd before the glitter and make the brows less thick and close together and maybe fade them out a bit more. The lashes can be played around with too depending on the effect you want at the time. I would also take it down the arms more so in photos its even and no skin shows through.

Cheshire Cat

This week I wanted to create a look based around the new Alice in Wonderland film 'Alice Through the Looking Glass'. I was inspired by the characters and one I've always liked in particular is the Cheshire cat. I decided to design a few different looks on face charts as I wanted to do the older cartoon version of the cat and the newer computerized version.

I started off with the original pink and purple Cheshire cat from the cartoon version of Alice in Wonderland.

- I started off this look with the eyes. As I was using glitter I didn't want fall out all over the rest of the makeup. I used MAC Paint Pot in 'Painterly' as a base for the eye shadow as I wanted this to keep the eye makeup in place. I used 'Brule' by MAC to set this.

- I then applied tape to the outer corner of my eye but left a bit of space between the lower lash line and the tape as this will allow me to connect the top and bottom liner later on. The winged liner on the upper lash line was applied as this will give me a guideline for the cut crease. Black Track Gel Liner is used for this. This is also extended a bit in the inner corner for a cat like effect. I then applied a hot pink eye shadow to the inner corner of my eye just below the brow and took this around the curve of my nose. I used an angled brush to sketch out the cut crease with the hot pink shadow. I then added purple eye shadow along the outer edge of the crease and winged this out on the edge to go in line with the winged liner.

- 'Flatline' eye shadow by Urban Decay was used on the lid and the inner corner of the eye to brighten the area. Black can be used to define the line of the cut crease and then blended out so it is softer. The NYX Glitter Glue is then added to the lid on top of the 'Flatline' eye shadow and star gazer glitter in 'Pink Nebula' is applied on top. I even extended this in the gap between the winged liner and cut crease.

- The tape can now be pulled off and mascara is swept through the upper lashes. I then used Kryolan Cream Liner in 'Snow' on my waterline and lower lash line to make my eye appear bigger. Black Track Gel Liner is then used just underneath this to create a new lower lash line. This is extended in the inner corner too for a more feline shape.

- The purple shade is used to blend the line out slightly on the lower lash line.

- I used a mixture of the pink and white Aquacolor from Kryolan and used this around my eyes (careful not to touch the eye shadow and liner), all over my face but leaving a space around my mouth as I will be painting a new mouth in. I coated my eyebrow hairs with the pink colour paint using a spoolie as this would ensure it is combed through. This will make them less visible and the new brow more noticeable. I used the white aqua color on a sponge and made two rounded shapes above my mouth to make it look more like a cats.

- I then painted the brows. I wanted to do curls at the end of each brow so I followed my design from my face chart. The inner part of the brow is thin and goes slightly onto the bridge of the nose.

- I then started to paint the mouth. With a thin brush I painted a line in the philtrum ( the groove above your upper lip) and created to rounded lines coming away from the bottom of the line. I then extended each line on to the cheeks to start making the smile. The bottom lines to complete the smile started on my chin and I had them slightly wavy at the corners of the painted mouth to give it a more Alice in wonderland look. Once the lines were joined and I had my shape I then painted the top set of teeth. I painted six at the top in the middle and then two fangs and then the rest were normal teeth again.

- For the bottom teeth I did the same rounded shapes as the top and the sixth one was slightly pointier than the others. the is just after the fangs. I then filled in the rest of the mouth black and added white to the teeth.

- The nose was the next step. I painted a black line coming from about the middle of my nostril and curving on the front of my nose with a slight dip in the middle so it isn't just round. I then used the dark purple aqua color to fill this in and a hot pink shadow over the top. Black shadow was used to blend the lines out and add shading of the edges of the curves and around the front of the nostrils.

- I then took the grey out of the MUA Winter Matte Palette and made two curved lines around where I put the white aqua color. I blended this out so it didn't appear to harsh. Using eyelash glue I added 3 black gems on each side and then broke apart an old makeup brush for the whiskers. As glue was still around the hairs I picked out tiny clumps of hair and stuck 3 pieces on each side also using eyelash glue.

- I added Eylure lashes to the upper lash line and red cherry lashes to the bottom.

- I then took the two Revolution Ultra Blush palettes and used a light purple highlight below the eyes, on the chin, brow bone and center of the nose. I took a dark pink blush and added this on the tops of the cheekbones. Dark purple aqua colour was used on the sides of the nose as a contour shade and blended by fading the colour down.

- I sponged white aqua color in the center of the chest and then took a multi bristled fan brush and used fast strokes in pink and purple paint to give a stripey fur look on either side of the white paint. I then went over the pink with black and white and did the same with the purple but adding light purple strokes too. Using the same brush I added the light purple in the middle of the white paint and used the purple highlighter from the Revolution Ultra blush Palette and highlighted the center of my chest.

- To tie the look together I added brush strokes on the forehead in a triangular shape. Black shadow can be added over the bottom lip to stop shine as the lip can still be seen with just black paint.

To complete the look I added a white wig and cat ears which has a tiara on. This is optional but worked nicely with the look.

Evaluation

I loved creating this look and designing it before hand on a face chart really helped. I think I could've done the teeth a bit bigger, mainly the bottom teeth. I also am not amazed by the fur on the forehead so I could experiment in the future with a different design. I also think a dark purple wig would suit this look but I didn't have that colour so I opted for white.

My Blog

My blog was created so I could document my work from my course at West Thames College studying makeup. I found this helpful as I was able to have a log of a step by step and what products I used in each stage and look. We have finished first year and I want to start documenting what i have been up to when i'm at home working on my own projects. This will help me remember how I did the looks as well as write notes and an evaluation at the end so I can see what I would change if I wanted to recreate it again. I also would like to put up a face chart for each design and then show the final product as they can vary slightly but its easier to see what direction I was going with the look before I created it. I think designing face charts will help me to be more creative without looking so much at other peoples designs and watching what they do.

I don't believe we continue with the blog posts in my second year at uni so I will be using this for my own kind of diary of looks.
