New Cheshire Cat

New Cheshire Cat

The new Alice in Wonderland film came out a few months ago so I drew up as design for the newer version of the Cheshire Cat. I really love this character, so much in fact that I have already done a look based on the older cartoon version. I wanted to change things up a bit and use more face paint for the eyes whereas with the other there was more glitter and liner.

I actually designed both looks for this character at the same time which was fun as you can see the differences and similarities in each.

Products

White, Pink, Grey, Turquoise, Blue, Black Face Paint
Turquoise eye shadow
Yellow eye shadow
Eyelash Glue
Cheap makeup brush for whiskers
Glitter liner in 'Distortion' by Urban Decay
MAC eye shadow in 'Saddle'
Maybelline Gel Liner in Black

Step by Step -

1) To start this makeup I took a black face paint and painted the circles around the eyes. I also painted the outline for the mouth. The rest of the face was painted with a grey face paint. I then painted the teeth in the mouth outline by using the black paint to sketch out their shape and then filling them in with white. The mouth is a lot thinner than the pink Cheshire cat look. White face paint was blended under the nose just above the mouth.

2) I then painted a black line on my nose to form where the cat nose will be. pink and white paint was mixed to create a light pink and i then filled in between the lines. A dark peach is eye shadow is then used to shade the edges of the nose ( I used 'Saddle by MAC). A black line is painted down the bottom of my nose to join in with the mouth.

3) I used a turquoise green colour on the bottom half of the eyes and then a darker blue on the top half. I then added a bit of yellow at the bottom to lighten it further. I used some cheap eye shadows in yellow and turquoise to dab along the bottom half of the eye. This helps blend the paint into the dark blue. For the cat-like pupil of my eye I used Maybelline Gel eyeliner as this will not smudge. I painted on the top half on my lid in a long triangular shape and then painted it on the lower half which is below my actual eye. I then darkened the outline of the eye in black and used a white dot on the upper left side. I dotted some turquoise paint near the white dot to make the eyes look as if the light is reflecting off them.

4) Black dots where added below the sides of the nose, above the mouth. I then took strands of black hair from a cheap makeup brush and glued them on to the black dots for whiskers. Grey paint was painted all down the center of the chest. On either sides of that I painted stripes of turquoise and darker grey alternately with a fan body painting brush. This makes the paint appear like fur which is a great effect when designing animal or creature face paints. I added flicks of grey with the same brush on the forehead and extended it slightly down the nose. I also took this around the edges of the jaw and face. The turquoise colour was added in the same manor around the face and I finished this off by adding white on the fan brush and going over the center of the chest and occasionally the striped paint.

5) Glitter liner in 'Distortion' was streaked through the fur to add a sparkle to the look and make it appear more magical. I also added this around the white dots in the eyes so they reflect more. The look was completed with a blue wig and black cat ears.
