Burberry 2015 Festive Campaign

Burberry Festive Campaign 2015

The Burberry Festive Campaign for 2015 starred a handful of famous faces and was celebrating 15 years of Billy Elliot. Celebrities and models which featured in this campaign are: James Bay, Romeo Beckham, Julie Walters, James Corden, Naomi Campbell, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Elton John, George Ezra and Michelle Dockery. The ad showed these celebrities bouncing and jumping in various poses into the air wearing festive Burberry pieces such as the famous tartan scarf and trench coat. The opening scene of the film was recreated for the start of the campaign with the record player being set up and dancing in the background. The key colours of this collection were red, beige, black and gold which really highlighted the festive theme.
Red low cut patterned dresses swirled around in the air as the models jumped. The camera also focused in on the black heeled boots which were paired with these pieces. The men wore tailored fitted suits in burgundy and black which were worn with white shirts. The background got gradually more busy as the ad went on by first starting with a patterned flower background to full on firework-like sparkles. The ad was shot by Mario Testino and he managed to capture the energy and spirit which was also present in the film.

The Makeup

The makeup was minimal for this campaign and I think this is because the visuals are already so busy. The look was very carefree and classic for Burberry. The models had very clean, fresh complexions with a very natural base on the skin. Burberry Fresh Glow Foundation was probably used on the skin to create this. Nude shadows were dusted in the socket line for the eyes. 'Mink' and 'Gold Copper' by Burberry could've been used on a fluffy brush for this. The upper lash line was slightly lined and smokey with a Jet Black Blendable Kohl Pencil. The lashes had a coating of mascara upon them. Cheeks were very plain but with a hint of blush to them. 'Blossom Blush' may have been used to create this flush of colour. The lips as always were very nude so 'Cameo Nude' Gloss may have been dabbed on the them.

The Hair

The hair is styled differently for each model but is still very natural. Naomi Campbell has a full fringe with long hair tossed over her shoulders which had been straightened. Julie Walters hair appeared to have been perhaps blow dried into shape before the shoot. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has a natural wave to her hair which was perfect for the everyday look that Burberry promotes. The men were also allowed freedom with their hair. Wax and hairspray were probably used just to style the hair in its natural shape and to keep the style in a bit longer.

Guido Palau is a hair stylist who I have mentioned in one of my previous posts on Fashion Catwalks (Marc Jacobs). He is primarily a fashion/editorial hair stylist who has done work for numerous magazines and catwalks. After having an unsuccessful start in a hairdressing salon he then began working for fashion work and photo shoots. He created the hair for many celebrities but his big break was when he worked for George Micheal for his 'Freedom' Music Video. This gave him exposure and he was quickly headhunted by designers such as Calvin Klein. Since then his career has picked up massively and he now designs hair for many catwalk shows each season.

One of my favorite hair looks Guido created was for his ponytail inspiration feature for Teen Vogue. There was six different styles which were all very unique and different from each other. This particular one reminded me of the film 'Grease' as it is inspired by the 1950's. I love how glamorous and neat it appears. As someone who can struggle with getting hair looking perfect, I do appreciate the talent Guido has as his hair looks never disappoint me. He always delivers with fresh and exciting ideas which help inspire my own creativity with hair.

When it comes to Guido Palau there is always one story of his which sticks in my mind. When he first started out as a hairdresser he worked at the Vidal Sasson salon. He performed a prank and got fired which then lead to him being told he would never make it as a hairdresser. He then began to question his career path and the direction in which he was going. Now he is one of the most known hairdressers in fashion and has even been named as one of the leading trend setters in the industry. Whenever I come across set backs with hair I just think about Guido Palau and how he could've chose to give up and he wouldn't have been as successful or known as he is today. To me, he is an example that hard work pays off.

Darren Ambrose is a hair stylist from the UK. He opened a salon in 1996 which has become a huge success although he progressed on to style avant garde hair and won an award for it in 2007. Since then he has one another 4 awards and is known for his visionary styles. His inspirations include Alexander McQueen who is also know for his innovative ideas. He now holds shows across the world to demonstrate and teach his skills. His wife, Jackie, also is a hairdresser and they help and encourage each other in the industry. Her interest in fashion has no doubt influenced him and his work. Together they have put a team of stylists together and have their own salon named after both of them as D&J Ambrose.

Imprisoned Collection

The image above really highlights the kind of style Darren has in his work. This was from his Imprisoned Collection which revolved around the Joan of Arc era. He even made the armour suit in the picture with chains to reflect the theme. I like that he thinks of all aspects including the costume and lighting as this had extra lighting from the back to enhance the colours of the hair. A wind machine was also used to create the wispy look to the hair. I feel thinking of all the different elements is something I should take note of and try and work on.

The one thing that separates his work from other hair stylists I have seen is the futuristic feel to it. Although each style is unique they all still have a ultra-modern theme. I like how he even uses airbrushing to add designs and patterns to the hair which really brings the idea together.

When he was asked on any advice he could give others he responded with the importance of believing in yourself and staying focused and true to what you do. I think as hair and makeup stylists its probably the best and most accurate advice he could give.

Red carpet Style Hair

Hair: Red Carpet

In our hair lesson this week we got to create hair up that was suitable for a red carpet event. We first had some demos of different ideas from our lecturer Emma. Each idea featured different elements as one hair up was created by the use of scalp plaits on the side of the head and then pinned into a bun in the back whereas others had more of a chignon bun at the back using all of the hair. This was something we could all experiment with and make up up our own hair design.

I decided to further explore the plaiting and twisting side to the hair up style. I first started by giving the hair a side parting and then sectioning the front away from the back. I then tied the back of the hair into a pony tail and used the brush to smooth it. I took small sections out of the pony tail and split it into two then wrapped each piece around each other to create a twist. I then pinned up the twist with hair grips in whatever shape the hair naturally forms. I repeated this process until all the hair in the ponytail was twisted and pinned up onto each other forming a bun. The left front section was then split into two and I plaited the bottom section in a normal plait as apposed to a twist. I then pulled this back and pinned it around the top of the bun. The top section was also plaited and I pinned this back underneath the bun so the plait criss cross on the side of the head. I did the same process of the right front section. I then put small thin grips into the bun in places I felt needed extra support or to close any gaps in the hair.

 Here is my final outcome:

What Went Well: I enjoyed the freedom of being able to try our own look today. I'm also glad I got to practice a different style of up do by using plaiting and twisting. Considering I didn't really have a plan for the style I was doing I am happy with the outcome.

What I Could Improve On: Although I was pleased on how my style turned out I still don't think it really fitted the red carpet theme. I think I did a bit of an overload on the plaiting and twisting but never the less I liked brushing up on that skill. I liked the fact that it appeared different although I still can't imagine it one a red carpet. I think if I was going to do this look again I would maybe try the chignon look. I also believe I could have sectioned the front neater but as I was working on a dolls head it can be hard to get the sectioning accurate because of the way the hair is sewn in the doll. I know that on a real persons head the sectioning would be easier and neater to do.
